Kandi Burruss is many things, including a singer, fashion icon and former reality TV star. But on her latest solo album, Kandi Koated, she shows that her strongest and best role is that of songwriter. Although her singing's (sometimes) strong and the album's production is (mostly) solid, the most impressive thing about Kandi Koated, which was released in the U.S. on Dec. 14, 2010, is the intelligence, depth and sometimes deeply personal nature of her songs' lyrics. If you thought "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" gave you an up-close and personal look at Kandi, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
One of the more impressive things about Kandi Koated
is it's length. The album's 17 tracks long and clocks in at about 55 minutes. And over the course of those songs - particularly the later tracks - Kandi gives you a personal view of her thoughts and emotions. One of the best tunes lyric-wise is the touching "Leroy Jones," on which Kandi sings about how she needs a man in her life who's like how her stepfather was when she was growing up: "He loved my mother's children like they were his own, he was a role model, he was there for me, the first man to take me on a shopping spree. That's the type of man me and my daughter need," she sings. And on another standout track, "The More I Try," she expresses her inability to move on after a break-up: "I try to be your friend but I ain't that strong, 'cause the more I try, the more I die inside," Kandi sings on the song. A third memorable tune is "Lucky," about hooking up with another woman's man: "I know you got a girl and I know I'm wrong, but a hard man's good to find," she seductively coos. "But she gets to have it all year long, so can't I just have tonight?"
Although there's some fine songwriting on Kandi Koated, not all the songs gel completely. Sometimes it's the vocals that are a little off, sometimes it's the song arrangements, sometimes it's both. Or sometimes the problem is something else completely. And those various flaws here and there hold the album back from reaching it's potential. So instead of purely being sugar coated candy, it's a candy coated pill that can be a little hard to swallow.
