Delayed R&B Albums List: Summer 2007 Edition

The Waiting is the Hardest Part ...

By Mark Edward Nero, About.com

If you've been anxiously awaiting an upcoming R&B release only to find that it keeps getting pushed back with no explanation, your Guide to R&B feels your pain. And in order to keep track of album delays, record deal cancellations, etc., every quarter we hit you with a list of the top 10 upcoming albums that have been delayed, pushed back or rescheduled. So if you're wondering about the long-delayed albums by Mya, Maxwell, Trey Songz and others, read the summer 2007 list of delayed albums.

"Because I Love It" - Amerie

In the fall of 2006, Amerie released a mixtape, with the promise of another mixtape to follow in early 2007, followed by a full album in the spring. Well, the album was released in Europe in May, but the U.S. released hasn't happened yet. But the good news is that her new album is expected to be released in the States on July 17.

"Physical Education" - Brooke Valentine

Remember her? Brooke Valentine's second album was supposed to be out in January 2007, but was pushed back indefinitely due to a merger between the label she's signed to, Capitol Records, and another label, Virgin Records. Physical Education currently has no release date set, but to refresh your memory regarding who she is, you can stream the video for the album's first single, Dope Girl," HERE.

"Ocean Drive" - Johnta Austin

Here's another album that's been pushed back a handful of times. It didn't come out in December 2006 or February 2007, as previously promised, and now the word is that the album keeps getting pushed back because the label he's signed to, So So Def (which is owned by producer Jermaine Dupri) split with Virgin Records and hooked up with Island Def Jam. Ocean Drive got caught in the middle and hasn't yet been rescheduled for release. In the meantime, you can stream the first single off Ocean Drive, "Turn It Up," by clicking HERE.

"Cheri Dennis" - Cheri Dennis

Back in the spring of 2006, Cheri dropped a single called "I Love You," then promptly disappeared. Well, she's back in the public eye now: her new single, "Portrait of Love," will be released to radio in mid-June and her album's (supposedly) set to be released in the late summer or early fall. You may not want to hold your breath waiting for the album, but you can stream "I Love You" HERE.

"Black Summer's Night" - Maxwell

Last year on his MySpace page, Maxwell promised that his latest album, Black Summer's Night, would be released on Feb. 13, 2007 - the day before Valentine's Day. Then he backed off that and said just the first single would be released on Valentine's Day. But on that date, the only thing posted on his MySpace page was an audio apology: "I've been working on it for about three days straight," he said. "I just don't feel it yet. I just want to send it out when it's right." No word yet on when/if he will release any music at all anytime in the next few months. Damn you, Maxwell: don't do us like this.

"Liberation" - Mya

The fourth album from Mya was supposed to be released in January 2007, but Liberation was then pushed back to April, then June after the first two singles, "Ayo," featuring DJ Kool, and "Lock U Down, feat. Lil' Wayne, didn't do so well. (You can stream "Ayo" by clicking HERE and "Lock U Down" right HERE.) A new single called "Ridin'" is expected to be released to radio on July 10 and the album's 'official' release date has been pushed back to Sept. 18, 2007.

"Mic Little" - Mic Little

Back in late September, 13-year-old Mic was riding high thanks to the single "Put It In a Letter," and was saying that his self-titled album would be out in November 2006. And now? Well, apparently Def Jam still hasn't decided on when it'll be in stores. No release date is set.

"Trey Day" - Trey Songz

Trey Songz' second album was originally due out June 12, but has been quietly pushed back with no explanation. Part of the reason might be the lukewarm reception to the album's first single, "Wonder Woman." You can stream the song's audio or video on the page that's right HERE.

"The First Seed" - Yummy Bingham

Cover © Motown.
Although The First Seed has already been released in the U.K., for some reason her label, Motown, hasn't seen fit to release it in the U.S. (probably because of the tepid reaction to the three singles that never caught on in America. The album's U.S. release may or may not ever come, but you can still stream two songs from the album on THIS page.

"Soundtrack of My Life" - Deemi

The original release date promised for this singer's debut album was June 5. Now her label, Atlantic, is only saying that the album will be out in "Summer 2007," which could mean July, August or even September. You can click HERE to stream the video for the album's first single/title track.
