New Music: Chaka Khan feat. Mary J. Blige - "Disrespectful"
Monday July 23, 2007
After a more than 10-year hiatus between albums of all-new material, the legendary Chaka Khan is back. Chaka's on a new label, Burgundy Records, and has a new album called Funk This coming out Sept. 25. The album's first single, a duet with Mary J. Blige called "Disrespectful," is about a woman who calls out her man for not treating her right. Musically, the song takes a lot of twists and turns and goes in some unexpected directions - maybe a couple too many directions. But when it comes to the vocals, everything's on point. Chaka sings her heart out on the song and you know Mary J. Blige always comes through with the good vocals. To stream the song, just click on a link below.

I like this song, but it is one that will have to grow on me. I love the stylistic way that Chaka sings, but to be honest - MARY J did not need to be on this album - there is nothing complimentary between the two artists - I would also liked to have heard more of a bass-bottom for the front portion - Chaka is used to singing intricate patterns and this is too easy….too much high hat cymbals.
Oh my lord, it’s massive and it’s wild! I LOVE IT! but then i’m positively biased towards Chaka. there’s a discordant yet tasty (and familiar) sample and Chaka’s wailing is pretty intense. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album
