In the past few years, R&B singer-songwriter Kelvin Johnson -- better known as K'Jon -- has had a big hit song, "On the Ocean," which reached No. 12 on the Billboard R&B Songs chart, and a hit album, 2009's I Get Around, which debuted at No. 1 on the R&B Albums chart. But despite his chart-topping success, for some reason, he remains one the most underappreciated artists in the urban music game. Mention his stage name to anyone outside his native Detroit and you might get a confused look. That is, unless you play them a snippet of "On the Ocean," and they realize they know the song, and therefore are familiar with his music. I mention this because K'Jon has just dropped a new single, "Tell You Why," and it's a song that's a prime example of why he tends to fly under the radar, but also why he's one of the best talents in R&B right now. The tune is a smooth, mature, well-sung piece of work, but it's also got a fairly complex, out of the ordinary musical arrangement and chorus, meaning that it takes a few listens for the tune's full impact to be felt. Although the song itself -- which is about a man planning to woo a beautiful woman others are telling him he doesn't have a chance with -- isn't instantly infectious, but as they say, still waters run deep.
"I love the way you move girl, I love everything you do girl, I love the way you style your hair, I love the way you smile girl," he sings. "You don't know my name, and I just wanna tell you why I love, I love, I love, I love you, girl."
And with repeatedly listenings, it becomes apparent how lovingly heartwarming it is. But don't just take my word for it. K'Jon's "Tell You Why" can be streamed via his official SoundCloud page; a link's included below.
