Pop-R&B singer-songwriter Alicia Keys turned 32 on Jan. 25, but instead of being concerned with getting presents, she's just given one to her fans. In observance of her birthday, Alicia recently dropped a new mix of her current single "Brand New Me," off her Girl On Fire album. As you may know, the original version of the song's a quiet, tender ballad where Alicia sings about growing and maturing to the point where she's her own woman and a domineering, controlling person no longer has a hold of her mind, heart and soul. On the remix, the lyric theme's basically the same, but the music's totally flipped. Ironically, on this song about newness, Alicia has reached back into the past and lifted the beat for Crystal Waters' 1991 House music hit "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)." Here's how Alicia explained it in an online note to her fans:
"I've been so overwhelmed by all of your birthday love that I HAD to do something extra special for you! Love to you!!! Big shout to Crystal Waters for your inspiration!... New Music!! B.N.M Part 2!!!!"
"BNM Part 2" completely turns the original "Brand New Me" on its head, reimagining the song as a bouncy, upbeat and fun retro anthem, complete with '90s-inspired cover art featuring AK toting an old school boombox.
