Some of the more interesting R&B-related news and rumors from the past week:

  • The Essence Festival has revealed its initial list of R&B artists expected to perform during the 2013 event, which takes place July 4-7 in New Orleans. Among the artists on the agenda are Maxwell, Brandy, Charlie Wilson, Jill Scott, Mint Condition, Keyshia Cole, Anthony David and BLACKstreet. Additional performers are expected to be announced in the coming months.
  • Alicia Keys has announced that she's going on a 24-date tour of the U.S. and Canada beginning in early March in support of her chart-topping Girl On Fire album. Joining her on the "Set the World On Fire" tour as opening act will be singer-songwriter Miguel.
  • Destiny's Child has released its first new song in eight years: the Pharrell Williams-produced track "Nuclear," which will appear on the group's upcoming compilation of their best love songs.
  • Avant garde singer Solange Knowles has announced that in February she's going on a brief seven city North American tour in support of her recently released EP, True.
  • Luke JamesSevyn StreeterMarcus Canty and Ester Dean are among the R&B/Soul artists predicted to make a sizable impact on the music world in 2013.
  • Erykah Badu created controversy by tweeting that she felt like going to the Apple store with her pistol after having trouble with her iCloud contacts list.
  • Former "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino has announced that her upcoming album is titled The Side Effects of You, and will be released March 13.
  • Ciara talked about her low album sales of recent years on an episode of the MTV show "How I Made It" and said that she uses her lows as motivation.
  • Despite decreased sales, Alicia Keys' Girl on Fire managed to return to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's albums chart this week, with 44,000 copies sold.
  • Mariah Carey says she hired more personal security after being physically threatened by fellow "American Idol" judge Nicki Minaj.
