As these words are being written, 2012 is almost over, so it's time to look back at the 10 best free R&B and Soul mixtapes that were released the year, as well as the best free digital EPs and full albums. The list, which is chock full of talented young up-and-coming artists like Luke James, who followed up his hit single "I Want You" with a very solid mixtape called Whispers in the Dark; Josh Xantus, whose Everybody Hates Josh X is more like a free digital album than a mixtape; JoiStaRR, whose Magic Monday mixtape takes its name from the fact that each song on it was released individually on consecutive Mondays before the full collection dropped; and brother duo Jake & Papa, who were formerly one half of the R&B group (and reality show subject) Brutha. The top spot however, belongs to mixtape pioneer Raheem DeVaughn, who dropped his 15th(!) mixtape, Heemy Taught Me 2, in November. The list includes links to where each mixtape can be listened to and downloaded legally and for free. To check out About R&B/Soul picks for the best free mixtapes of 2012, have a look below.
