A few years ago (March 2008, to be precise) yours truly profiled a talented singer now known as Stevie Notes as part of a week-long series of profiles of unsigned artists who deserved some acclaim. Well, fast forwarding four years to the present day, Stevie Notes is now part of a Funk-Rock/Soul act called Blackwaat3r. In addition to Stevie, the group includes musicians Keenan 'KGE' Ephriam, Erick Walls, Jairus JMO and Eric Ingram. They recently released a song together, "Waat3r For Fir3," a track that's apparently about a woman who's got lead singer Stevie all twisted up:
"Whether I'm found or if I'm lost, If I want her close, I got to pay the cost, Feels so good but it's so wrong, I touch my glory and sing my song, This ain't real, this ain't fake, Pinch my skin, I don't wanna wake, It's like water, water for fire."
The group's sound is a combination of Stevie's sweet, soulful falsetto layered over warm Funk-Soul instrumentation, for a musical blend that's fresh and original, but at the same time, brings to mind other genre-crossing acts like Living Colour and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. For anyone living in the band's home base in Southern California, they're scheduled to perform at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Nov. 27, 2012. But for now, their current single can be streamed at soundcloud.com. A link is included below.
