It's been 10 years since brilliant but enigmatic R&B/Soul artist Cody ChesnuTT released his underground classic debut album, The Headphone Masterpiece. And over that 10 years, Cody's legend has still managed to grow despite the fact that he still hasn't released an official second album. The closest he's come until now has been the six-song EP Black Skin No Value, which quietly dropped in late 2010. But as devoted ChesnuTT nuts know, Cody's due to release his sophomore album, Landing on a Hundred, later this month. A few songs from it have already been leaked, such as the maternal ode "That's Still Mama" and the album-opened "Till I Met Thee." And now a new single has just dropped via One Little Indian Records. The song "Don't Wanna Go the Other Way" is the tale of a man trying to hold onto hope and faith instead of mentally slipping into darkness:
"I'm trying, trying hard to hold onto my hope, hold onto my faith in God," he sings at one point. "I'm trying to hold on, trying not to fall."
Despite the bleak subject, the song's very uptempo, and might be best described as a combination of frantic and anguished. Yours truly has had a chance to hear Landing on a Hundred a few times already, and this track is definitely one of the standouts, in my humble opinion. A review of the full album will be posted right here the day before the album's Oct. 30, 2012 release date, but in the meantime, the latest single comes highly recommended. It can be streamed via the link below.
