I thought I'd learned awhile back not to judge a book by it's cover, but when I first read
Zaki Ibrahim's name and saw that she was going to perform at the
South By Southwest music festival later this month, I assumed she was a world music artist and/or someone whose sound bore no relation to American R&B and Soul music. But that assumption was wrong. Zaki may be from British Columbia, but she's got a jazzy vocal style and a hip-hop swagger. Plus, she's already shared the stage with numerous American artists, including Erykah Badu and The Roots. And if that wasn't enough, she raps and beat boxes, too. Her EP
Ecelctica (Episodes in Purple), which dropped in Canada and South Africa in 2008, will be released in the U.S. sometime this spring. But for now, you can get a taste of her sound by clicking the link below. And as always, please feel free to leave a comment. Your opinion's always appreciated.
