New Music: Melinda Doolittle - "It's Your Love"

Your Guide to R&B isn't a big fan of the American Idol franchise, and in fact I can count on one hand the number of singers from the show whom I've been genuinely impressed by. One of those singers, however, is definitely the always sunny Ms. Melinda Doolittle, who emerged as a finalist on Idol's sixth season. Well, after lying low for awhile, our girl Melinda's back with a record deal, a new single, and a new album on the way. The label is Hi Fi Recordings, the song is the retro "It's Your Love," and the album, Coming Back to You, is due out Feb. 3, 2009. It remains to be seen if Melinda can reach the level of success that other "American Idol" finalists and winners have achieved over the years, but she's off to a strong start with the '70s-Soul sounding throwback "It's Your Love," which you can stream by clicking the link below.

We have had several events where a group of us have come together and met Melinda, the first in Novemember 2007 where we all attended her first solo concert, and then joined her in a party afterwords (I was one of 40 of us who did that - flying in from the UK to meet Melinda in person). In April 2008 we submitted a team for the Nashville Country Music Marathon and raised over $9000 for Malaria No More, Melinda’s favourite charity. We will meet again next April (2009)

I’ve loved her since her first audition, and this is again the proof she’s vocally the best AI ever seen. However, I wonder this strongly 70s vibe can make her commercial success that matches her talent.

Yes, Melinda Doolittle has been extremely busy since Idol, performing solo and with others; recently singing 2 Aretha Franklin songs at the Musicians Hall of Fame ceremony in Nashville. Our Girl is an authentic heir to the greats such as Aretha and Gladys Knight and her debut CD just scratches the surface of her potential.
