If Lauryn Hill was still making music today, it might sound something like "Mr. President," the latest single from self-described "alien from outer space" Janelle Monae. "Mr. President," which is on the sepcial edition of Janelle's seven song Metropolis: The Chase Suite EP, which came out in August 2008. Five of the songs on the album are part of a sort of futuristic space opera, but "Mr. President" is a very earthly track about hard economic times: "Dear Mr. President, I hope you got the letter I sent/A dollar only goes so far, and we need health care, no matter who we are," she sings. The song sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of the album, but taken by itself, it's a beautiful work of art. You can stream it by clicking the link below.
