Syleena Johnson's Got Labor Pains

Wednesday July 16, 2008
Syleena JohnsonIt's been about three years since Soul & R&B diva Syleena Johnson dropped her third album, 2005's Chapter 3: The Flesh. But in January 2009 she's making her return to the music world with a new album, Chapter 4: Labor Pains. It'll be the first release on her self-owned label, Aneelys Records. (Aneelys is Syleena spelled backwards.) If you're not familiar with Syleena, she's the soulful diva who sang the chorus on the hit Kanye West single "All Falls Down." And if you've heard that song, then you know ol' girl can sing. But if "All Falls Down" is the only thing you know her from, you can catch up on Syleena in two ways: one, by reading your Guide to R&B's mini-bio of her life and times, and second by checking out a 10-minute video of her performing live at an album listening party in her hometown of Chicago. The links are below. (BTW, the performance video's got a little salty language, so consider yourself warned.)

I heard about Syleena’s new Chapter and I’m sooooooooo excited that she’s coming out with something new. She’s really missing in R&B today. It’s such a sigh of relief. I was holding my breath there for a minute.

I love this woman’s work. I have every Chapter and looking forward to Chapter 4: Labor Pains. Especially after what I’ve heard so far.

She has a new single titled Shoo Fly that is very raw, yet classy story about baby-mama drama.

It’s it the “Guess What” of Chapter 4. Except the guess what in Shoo Fly is directed toward a female, from a female. A woman to woman discussion. Something everybody can relate to.

I heard these songs on her myspace. Take a listen if you haven’t: http://www.myspace.com/syleenajohnson

Can’t wait for Chapter 4. It says it’s due in September, but lately I’ve been hearing it’s now due January 2009.

Based on what I’ve heard so far from Chapter 4, it’s well worth the wait.

She also has a song called Freedom that very inspiring. Go ‘head Syleena.
