20 Best R&B Albums of 2007

Tuesday December 18, 2007
Amy Winehouse - Back to BlackThe year two-007 started off with quite a few mediocre albums, but the year was rescued during its second half thanks to phenomenal albums by household names like Mary J. Blige, Prince and Chaka Khan, among others. But your Guide to R&B's hands-down favorite of the year was Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, an album that offers a deep look into a troubled woman's heart and soul and gives you the answers as to why she's such a mess. No Musiq Soulchild — Luvanmusiq?

I also think that the soundtrack to Daddy’s Little Girls is a great R&B compliation, as well.

Trent, you’re absolutely right about Daddy’s Little Girls – I had forgotten to put it on the list. As far as Musiq, I was on the fence about including his new album – I really didn’t think it was anything special. It’s good, but not extra-good.

Nero, I don’t think you effed up on Carl Thomas, I wasn’t feeling it either. I’m gonna go give it another spin though, just to give him the BOD.

Oh yeah, you might wanna double check your numberings in the list management tool, because it’s not showing up. I’m guessing the list is in descending order.

And that Ne-Yo album sucked donkey balls. He’s trying too hard to be like Mike and Prince but lacks the eccentricities of those guys.

I could really use a new D’Angelo album right now.

Rizoh,
Give the Carl Thomas a couple more listens – it’ll grow on you. And I intentionally didn’t use a numbering system for the list – only the final list at the end of the year will be numbered. Besides, I like the empty boxes better than actual numbers.
And hey – wait. Can U actually say “sucked donkey balls” on this site? Why, yes – I guess you can! ;)

YESSS!!!! Amy Winehouse was the best album of the year! It’s one of those timeless albums that you can pull out 2 years from now and still love it. She is such a great singer, I can’t tell you how many times I felt EXACTLY the way she was by just listening to the album. The exceptional tracks were “Tears dry on their own”, “Rehab”, and “Back yo black” for their lyrics and emotion. What were your favorite tracks Nero??

(7) Nero says:

My favorite song on Back to Black literally changed from week to week, so I can’t pick just 1 song. I am quite fond of “Addicted” though, which isn’t on the U.S. version of the album.

(8) Dmarcus says:

Same here! But overall, there’s faves that will always be there. Addicted is a great track even though the words aren’t for everybody. But I love her defiance in her song and just showing who she is. She just tells it like it is! Only song that I really won’t LIKE AS MY FAVORITE nomatter what,is, “Just Friends”, because it just seems lazy to me. Tears Dry on Their Own is really the BEST for her raw vocals and lyrocs. “I can’t play myself again, I should just be my own best friend, not f**k myself in the head w/stupid men” Glad to hear that she writes all of her music also.

(9) Nero says:

Yeah, “Just Friends” is pretty lackluster, but I attribute that to the reggae vibe. Amy may have been getting into the spirit of the song by smoking some of the sticky icky.
