New Music: Diana Ross - I Love You

Wednesday January 17, 2007
Diana Ross: I Love YouIf you've read the About R&B list of the top 10 new album releases for January 2007, you know that Diana Ross has a new album out called I Love You. The album, which contains Diana's versions of vintage pop songs like "The Look of Love" and "This Magic Moment," is her first studio album in over seven years. But if you're expecting traditional Supremes-style R&B, think again. There are R&B elements, but for the most part, I Love You consists of warmed-over material that will probably appeal most to people over 55. But instead of me dissing a legend by giving this album a bad review, your Guide to R&B invites you to judge the album for yourself by listening to a free, legal stream of I Love You by clicking on a link below.

This under 40-year old musician appreciates Diana Ross’ latest CD “I Love You” for it’s all too-rare musical sincerity. The song selections feel inspired by personal memories rather than contemporary marketing. And that’s a major plus, in my play-book. Her take on I Want You (written by her brother T-Boy Ross), More Today Than Yesterday, and the always-sensual The Look of Love are stand-outs. And Diana delivers the most heartfelt rendition of What About Love (from The Color Purple musical) that I’ve heard to date. While the target audience is clearly adult, it’s worth noting that I first heard selections from this CD on Wendy Williams’s NYC hip hop radio station. Always good to keep your ears & heart open – there is much to learn from our living legends. Much Respect & Appreciation to Diana Ross!

In a remarkable career spanning over 40 years, Diana Ross has proven herself the consummate music artist as well as one of the most iconic singers of all time. The album I Love You from 2007 featured new interpretations of familiar love songs. That same year the cable television network BET honored Ross with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

It’s very hard for people to be ojective about Miss Ross. Without Gordy and the Supremes she often flounders. This cd is quite boring.

(6) Marie Staton says:

I would totally disagree. This is not a boring CD . Diana Ross — I LOVE YOU

I always find persons who has
nonconstructive critical of Diana Ross’ music to be hilariously detached from her style and oblivious to her brand of performance. The same consistent style and brand of performance that has brought her 18 # 1 pop hits and over 70 millions records sold one of the most successful solo female artists and if you factor in her work as lead Supreme she still my be the most successful.

The album “I love you” is very consistent with Ross’ artistic love fest. The CD was Diana’s first studio album since Every Day is a New Day in 1999 and sold well in the United Kingdom. It was released in North America on January 16, 2007, and debuted on the Billboard 200 as hot shot debut (#32). It’s her highest charting album since Swept Away peaked at number 26 in 1984. Other chart positions: Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums (#16), Top Internet Albums (#31).

A person that favors Alice Cooper or 50 cents would probably not favor this album and should not be a reviewer. Ms. Ross is not nor has ever been a gospel vocalist. However “I love you” spotlights the legendary Divas own unique sophisticated soul!

This new material finds Diana Ross in very fine form. In fact, she has not sounded this consistently good on record since 1991’s The Force behind the Power. Her ever-distinct voice has developed a shimmering and voluptuous timbre.

Billboard magazine has named her the “Female Entertainer of the Century.” The Guinness Book Of World Records declared Diana Ross as the most successful female music artist of the 20th century with a total of eighteen American number-one singles: twelve as lead singer of The Supremes and six as a soloist. Ross was the first female solo artist to score six number-ones.

I Love You may not necessarily expand Ross’ audience—but it does testify to her endearing zealousness to enchant and entertain.
